Stone City

     Stone City

     28.5"x30.5" oil on canvas

12/28/20

I had such a strange experience with this painting. To be honest I don't have much of memory how I finished this piece, at the same time I don't recall any of my struggle making decision regarding designing, colors, textures and shapes. Everything went nice and smooth, by the time I turned around this painting was finished, I mean I got the result that I hoped for. I always think result is the everything no matter how hard or how long I worked for it if result is not what I wanted it doesn't mean much. I was wondering why I don't have much of memory of the time I spent, only thing I remember was something like I was unconscious while I was moving brushes. My guess is that I might have experienced what happens when I paint intuitively.

I would like to share with you all about my flight experience last May 2019. My trip started from Los Angeles to Osaka Japan. I usually I take west bound but this time I took east bound as it took me more than 37 hours, I know it sounds crazy but I wanted be up in the air as long as possible, even I embraced the long line of TSA at the LAX and even planned that I will have enough time at the airside once I passed the passport control, I was already in the airside more than 3 hours prior to my departure. Wondering around like a sleep walker, I was already on  could 9. Flight experience was way more better than I expected, seat was comfortable as I'm such a small guy, talking about Food, I had the best inflight dinner ever! The best experience of this flight from LAX to DOH was as I was stumbling down the aisle to the back of the plane where eight of flight attendants were congregating on their break and somehow I was start mingling with them, I still can't remember why this happened but I spent best next 20 minuets of a pow wow up in the air at the back end of the aircraft and in front of the bathrooms. So this 16 hours of my flight went so fast and comfortable. I won't mention about rest of this trip to Osaka as there were so many mishaps to tell so I would like to share with you at some other time.

While wondering when will I be able to start traveling again, this painting popped up in my head.  Since everything is still uncertain, painting like a vignette is more appropriate for this idea, I thought. By making a vignette I had more free rein for my design, shapes, textures and colors. I enjoyed gathering and weaving different shapes with textures and colors like a tapestry. I love the sound of roaring engines, smell of jet fuel, and best of all hearing annoying yet comforting yapping sounds of fellow travelers. I hope these days will come back to us soon and like to find myself standing in line at a gate before boarding at some faraway land.

A Morning Routine

A Morning Routine

29"x30.5" oil on canvas

10/11/20

Before I start this painting I had a pretty good idea how this piece would be like at the end. Well, I was so wrong this time. I never had a piece that went through so many changes along the way, the color of the wall I had change 4 or 5 times and further more I changed the color of the foreground 4 or 5 times. As you know if you change one thing you have to change another, I was pulling my hair out. Going to sleep thinking that everything seems coming together after so many changes but in the morning I was convinced somebody might have came in and changed the piece. I kept telling myself, What a .............! It is such a dilemma and painful to think I might have to change the colors AGAIN! Anyways, at the end I somehow managed to come up with sensation that I hoped for.

Floating

 Floating

28.5"x30.5" oil on canvas

9/18/20

At the beginning I was very curious about how far I can simplify a painting but then soon I realized it was harder than I thought, yet what I found out was that I saw myself having a fun trying to make something excited about out of limited shapes. Like always, I had to either fake it or wing it till I make it but along the way I often come across with new colors, textures and so on. Lots of times I end up with unexpected paintings, this is what I would say you learn by doing it. This piece I really enjoyed coming up something interesting within limited shapes or areas of painting, I would say. One more thing I realized that it is easy to recognize a painting from a distance if it is painted in a simple way, which I have to think about. Someone said, how to enjoy a painting, first look at the painting from a distance, then stand in front of the painting then finally look at the painting really close, I mean REALLY close!

Twilight

Twilight

28.5"x30" oil on canvas

8/28/20

At the beginning I was wondering what kid of textures I can fill this painting with. To my surprise one texture led to the other I managed to cover this whole painting.  Love to enjoy those textures at the same time I embrace emergence of new shapes that I didn't planned when I started. This painting I started pay more attention to each shapes hoping to find some comfort to my eyes. Those shapes have unlimited possibilities but unfortunately I have to choose one or more likely I have to twist each shapes to my liking.  As for the colors I wish they might help to create ambience of twilight which is my favorite time of the day. A cup of coffee everyone?

Sky Bar 820

Sky Bar 820

29"x32" oil on canvas

8/14/20

This painting I wasn't sure how I'm suppose to work on it at the beginning but best way was to just get started anyway. Most of my paintings are start from a tiny sketches almost like scribbles so I have no idea what the final piece is going to be, may be that's what I love about painting. Instead of trying to describe objects I replace with brush markings. Each markings which have colors, shapes and textures are signals to my sensations and emotions. So I start thinking lately that a painting is a tapestry of my favorite makings. From one markings to the other my eyes wonder around in a painting, I would say it's like a little voyage on a canvas and furthermore markings appear slightly different depend on the time of the day. It's a never ending story once my eyes are trapped inside a painting wonder around from one strokes to the other. So I kept making markings all over this painting but at some point my eyes told me it's time to stop. My eyes were telling me that all marking seems happy together with neighboring markings. This painting appeared as a one piece as a whole.

A Dog Day Afternoon

A Dog Day Afternoon

27"x28"
oil on canvas

7/31/20
Last month, dear friend of mine from school sent me a box filled with tubes of oil paints. Among them there was a color called venetian red which I thought probably I won't be using it as I tend to shy away from unfamiliar colors or I would say dear to try it. To my surprise this color became one of my favorite which worked perfectly to create ambience of lazy, sleepy, hot sultry afternoon during summer. Like my friend This friend has been keep nagging me that I should venture out more often from my comfort zone - I might have a chance to find out something special out of ordinary. Yes, he was absolutely right!

An Ordinary Day In Los Angeles

27"x28"

7/24/20
If I take a walk around in my neighborhood where I come across those three ugly palm trees. My jaw dropped when I first saw them yet I couldn't help staring at them. I saw many many beautiful palm trees in my life but not those three. Funny thing is sometimes after a long hard looking at things which might change our perception, now I love those ugly palm trees. Ordinary became something Special, it was a good day.

  Espresso

23"x26.5"
oil on canvas

6/20/20
Last few weeks I was wondering what's going to be my next piece and then one day this painting popped up in my head. To me, a simple shape of a bar counter triggers a painting, I don't know when, what and why I urge to paint. Most of the time I don't know the details of a painting at he beginning but as I progress, a painting starts taking it's shape on the canvas. From the start to the finish this act of painting is a series of decision making. This always fascinates me as there is no single answer how to finish it so it's all up to me. All I can do is just hope for the best and give my best shot. I still don't understand how my brain works while I'm painting though....as most of the time as I say, I'm on auto pilot.

Gelato

22.5"x26.5"

5/30/20
When I was flipping through the pages of my sketch book I came across a tiny scribble which I made a little while ago. Couldn't quite figure out what it was then but it turned out be a sketch of one of a storefront at the local mall near by. Took a little while to figure out why I drew it back then, I was just standing in front of the store like an idiot but somehow I felt so happy just being there, that's why! It was one of the special moment that I experience from time to time-sooo happy with no reason, so it gave me a good reason to start another painting.

Staying Home

Staying Home

22"x26"

5/8/20
Hang in there a little bit longer by staying at home. There are lots of people are working out there in spite of such a harsh conditions so at least what we can do to support the situation is to stay home as much as we can to prevent further infection. We can still be happy and productive at home. After the initial shock I couldn't paint for a while but now I'm back to my painting again, thank God!

Dining Out

Dining Out

22"x26"
oil on canvas

4/24/20
Wonder when will we be able to go out and have a favorite dishes at restaurants? It seems such a long time ago last time we went out for a family dinner. I miss sight and sounds of crowds. All I think about nowadays is what I want to eat first when things ease out and start going out again. But then again, there so many people out there dedicate their lives to keep us going each day. Thank You for all the folks who are still working under this extreme situation!

A few years back when I was strolling in the afternoon I came across this massive yellow bougainvillea which left me with a long lasting impression to this day at the same time I thought about our bougainvillea. In Los Angeles, bougainvillea is everywhere brightening up all the streets and houses. They come in different colors but the most common color is red purple around my neighborhood. They are not only radiant but very resilient. After we fumigated the house including our bougainvillea, we thought we lost our lovely bougainvillea but to our surprise all the flowers came back! Yes they are radiant and resilient!

3/22/20
This painting took me some time to finish as after I put my brushes down one after the other I was busy changing here and there. As all we know that if we change one thing we have to change something else to balance the change. Some time it seems wise to wait to think the painting is done. As time passes by the painting seems start appearing differently may be because our eyes get use to it and start seeing more objectively. So for me, it is important to be more patient and put the painting aside for a while after I think it's done.

This piece I knew that from the beginning I love to show some snow in it. As I was keep painting and thinking how am I suppose to paint snow in the night???, I don't know why but I knew didn't want to show snow all over the painting so my instinct told me to paint mostly around the lighting area, at the same time I prepaired different value of the snow. At the end this helped creating a sense of space among the snow.

The Arctic Circle

22"x23"
oil on canvas

2/21/20
I hate cold! Yet, I don't mind to freeze to death if I can see the northern light and feel the piercing air into my lungs. I had a worst experience on the night train without heater during traveling northern Japan Hokkaido. My can of Coke was frozen by the morning so since then being cold is my worst nightmare. Well then again, why not pay a visit to the Arctic Circle if I can experience the sight of striking colors all around. Yes, I have to jump in the cold even I might die up there!
At first my initial idea was paint a lots of snow but I has such a hard time deciding whether I should paint the snow or not. But at the end I decided not to as the painting looks cold enough without it!

The First Light

22"x23"

2/7/20
I love when I see the sun light through my window in the morning. The beginning of a new day feeling refreshed. Living in southern California I get this blinding sun light pretty much all year round, lucky me! I enjoyed painting this piece although it end up a little bit messy as I've been relying too much  on my drawing but I forced myself to be more free and relaxed on this one. It always gets messy when I start doing something new as I don't know what to expect around the corner. At least I tried hoping the feeling would be there that I try to achieve.
On to a next piece!

I never thought that I would be still painting but seems like getting harder to quit now. As when I'm working on a painting there always this little voice starts whispering from back of my head saying " What"s your next piece? " Most of the time I don't know what's going to happen to the next painting. Like this painting I end up with simple, bold and flat piece, avoiding describing too much subject matter. Putting my mind on shapes as I have my weakness and fetish to certain shapes. As for my reminder, colors and textures plays a big part in simple design, I had a extensive conversations with this painting about colors and textures at the same time I really enjoyed exploring shapes.
