Twilight

Twilight

28.5"x30" oil on canvas

8/28/20

At the beginning I was wondering what kid of textures I can fill this painting with. To my surprise one texture led to the other I managed to cover this whole painting.  Love to enjoy those textures at the same time I embrace emergence of new shapes that I didn't planned when I started. This painting I started pay more attention to each shapes hoping to find some comfort to my eyes. Those shapes have unlimited possibilities but unfortunately I have to choose one or more likely I have to twist each shapes to my liking.  As for the colors I wish they might help to create ambience of twilight which is my favorite time of the day. A cup of coffee everyone?

Sky Bar 820

Sky Bar 820

29"x32" oil on canvas

8/14/20

This painting I wasn't sure how I'm suppose to work on it at the beginning but best way was to just get started anyway. Most of my paintings are start from a tiny sketches almost like scribbles so I have no idea what the final piece is going to be, may be that's what I love about painting. Instead of trying to describe objects I replace with brush markings. Each markings which have colors, shapes and textures are signals to my sensations and emotions. So I start thinking lately that a painting is a tapestry of my favorite makings. From one markings to the other my eyes wonder around in a painting, I would say it's like a little voyage on a canvas and furthermore markings appear slightly different depend on the time of the day. It's a never ending story once my eyes are trapped inside a painting wonder around from one strokes to the other. So I kept making markings all over this painting but at some point my eyes told me it's time to stop. My eyes were telling me that all marking seems happy together with neighboring markings. This painting appeared as a one piece as a whole.

A Dog Day Afternoon

A Dog Day Afternoon

27"x28"
oil on canvas

7/31/20
Last month, dear friend of mine from school sent me a box filled with tubes of oil paints. Among them there was a color called venetian red which I thought probably I won't be using it as I tend to shy away from unfamiliar colors or I would say dear to try it. To my surprise this color became one of my favorite which worked perfectly to create ambience of lazy, sleepy, hot sultry afternoon during summer. Like my friend This friend has been keep nagging me that I should venture out more often from my comfort zone - I might have a chance to find out something special out of ordinary. Yes, he was absolutely right!

An Ordinary Day In Los Angeles

An Ordinary Day In Los Angeles

27"x28"
oil on canvas

If I take a walk around in my neighborhood where I come across those three ugly palm trees. My jaw dropped when I first saw them yet I couldn't help staring at them. I saw many many beautiful palm trees in my life but not those three. Funny thing is sometimes after a long hard looking at things which might change our perception, now I love those ugly palm trees. Ordinary became something Special, it was a good day.

Espresso

  Espresso

23"x26.5"
oil on canvas

6/20/20
Last few weeks I was wondering what's going to be my next piece and then one day this painting popped up in my head. To me, a simple shape of a bar counter triggers a painting, I don't know when, what and why I urge to paint. Most of the time I don't know the details of a painting at he beginning but as I progress, a painting starts taking it's shape on the canvas. From the start to the finish this act of painting is a series of decision making. This always fascinates me as there is no single answer how to finish it so it's all up to me. All I can do is just hope for the best and give my best shot. I still don't understand how my brain works while I'm painting though....as most of the time as I say, I'm on auto pilot.

Gelato

Gelato

22.5"x26.5"
oil on canvas

5/30/20
When I was flipping through the pages of my sketch book I came across a tiny scribble which I made a little while ago. Couldn't quite figure out what it was then but it turned out be a sketch of one of a storefront at the local mall near by. Took a little while to figure out why I drew it back then, I was just standing in front of the store like an idiot but somehow I felt so happy just being there, that's why! It was one of the special moment that I experience from time to time-sooo happy with no reason, so it gave me a good reason to start another painting.

Staying Home

Staying Home

22"x26"
oil on canvas

5/8/20
Hang in there a little bit longer by staying at home. There are lots of people are working out there in spite of such a harsh conditions so at least what we can do to support the situation is to stay home as much as we can to prevent further infection. We can still be happy and productive at home. After the initial shock I couldn't paint for a while but now I'm back to my painting again, thank God!
